Domitian's 14th imperatorial acclamation, reflected in the IMP XIIII title, dates this quinarius precisely to 88 AD — the same year he celebrated the Ludi Saeculares, the century-marking games held a decade ahead of their traditional schedule simply because Domitian wanted them on his watch. The quinarius denomination had seen only sporadic revival under earlier emperors, and Domitian's use of it remains something of an administrative curiosity, likely tied to specific transactional or donative purposes rather than general circulation.
RIC II.1 #589 is scarce by any measure, reflecting the quinarius's limited production windows throughout the imperial period.
