Additional information

The quinarius aureus was never a workhorse denomination — struck in limited quantities, it functioned largely as a donative or presentation piece rather than everyday exchange. Tiberius issued these sparingly, and the TR POT XXVIIII dating places this firmly in 27–28 AD, a period when the emperor had already begun his slow withdrawal from Rome that would culminate in his permanent retirement to Capri in 31 AD. RIC I 13 is not a common type by any measure; surviving examples turn up infrequently even in major European collections.
