Domitian's 14th imperatorial acclamation and 14th consulship, both commemorated in this coin's obverse legend, place its issue firmly in 88 AD — a year consumed by the Danubian wars against the Dacians and the political theater of the Ludi Saeculares, the century games last held under Augustus. The quinarius aureus was never a workhorse denomination; it circulated in narrow, elite channels, which partly explains why so few survive in any condition.
RIC II.1 588 is a scarce type even within Domitian's already thinly collected gold issues.
