Obverse description Bare or lightly laureate head of Augustus facing right, rendered in fine portrait style characteristic of the Lugdunum mint under the Augustan principate. The emperor's idealized effigy displays a youthful, clean-shaven profile with carefully articulated hair locks swept forward over the brow. The circular legend AVGVSTVS DIVI F runs around the periphery, identifying the emperor as son of the deified Julius Caesar. The flan is slightly irregular, as is typical of hammered gold coinage of this period, and the portrait occupies the majority of the obverse field.
