Obverse description Central field occupied by the Farnese heraldic shield, displaying the characteristic six fleurs-de-lis arrangement of the Farnese arms, surmounted by a ducal ring or annulet above the escutcheon. The legend runs around the periphery in Latin capital letters, separated by stops, within a beaded border. The die work is typical of mid-sixteenth-century northern Italian hammered coinage, with an irregular flan and bold relief on the central device.
