The lettering is in Gothic Latin characters, somewhat worn and irregularly spaced due to the hammered manufacture. Louis II ruled Mantua as the third Gonzaga captain-general, consolidating a dynasty that had seized power from the Bonacolsi in the coup of 1328. The quattrino was the workhorse of northern Italian petty coinage — a billon fraction ground through daily market transactions until most examples are heavily worn. Survivors in discernible condition are genuinely uncommon for this particular lord and mint.
