Obverse description Central field features a heraldic shield of the Gonzaga family charged with four horizontal bars (fasces), rendered in a bold, simplified medieval style. The shield is depicted in full, upright position and occupies the majority of the coin's face. A beaded inner circle surrounds the central device, with the circumferential legend reading ✠ ⸰ LO ⸰ D ⸰ GONZAGA, identifying the issuer as Louis of Gonzaga. The lettering is in Gothic Latin characters, somewhat worn and irregularly spaced due to the hammered manufacture. The flan is characteristically irregular in shape, as typical of medieval billon coinage.
