Additional information

Lorenzo di Piero de' Medici received the lordship of Urbino in 1516 after Leo X engineered a brutal military campaign to oust Francesco Maria I della Rovere — a dispossession that scandalized much of the Italian peninsula. The duchy was effectively a papal gift, and Lorenzo's coinage from this period reflects his awkward dual status as both Florentine magnate and imposed Urbinate ruler. He died in 1519 at twenty-six, almost certainly of syphilis compounded by tuberculosis, leaving no legitimate male heir and the duchy reverting promptly to della Rovere control.
