Francesco Maria I della Rovere ruled Urbino through almost continuous upheaval — expelled by Pope Leo X in 1516 and replaced with Lorenzo de' Medici, he retook the duchy by force in 1521 after Leo's death. Coinage struck across that thirty-year window therefore spans two distinct periods of actual control, separated by five years of exile, which complicates precise attribution of individual specimens to either phase of his rule.
Gubbio's mint was a secondary operation within the duchy, producing small billon fractions primarily for local market use. The CNI XIV references for this type show die variation across the 52–57 range.
