Beschrijving keerzijde Standing figure of the Madonna holding the Christ Child, depicted in frontal pose with the infant positioned before her. The letters S and M flank the central figure to the left and right respectively, abbreviating Santa Maria. The date of issue appears in the exergue below the main design. The design is characteristic of the Marian devotional iconography common on small billon issues of the Gonzaga lordship, struck on an irregular planchet with weak areas typical of hammered production.

Aanvullende informatie

Ferrante Gonzaga, Lord of Castiglione delle Stiviere, was a minor cadet of the Mantuan Gonzaga line — the kind of petty imperial fief that technically retained the right to strike coin but rarely had the economic weight to justify it. This quattrino belongs to a small civic coinage issued under that privilege, billon being the practical choice for a territory with no silver of its own to speak of. Castiglione's minting output under Ferrante was limited, and pieces from this issue turn up infrequently in trade.
