Louis I of Anjou's hold on Provence came through his mother Joanna I of Naples, whose turbulent reign included a papal sale — she sold Avignon to Clement VI in 1348 for 80,000 florins, partly to buy political cover after being implicated in the murder of her first husband. The joint obverse naming both Joanna and Louis reflects the peculiar dynastic arrangement by which Anjou governed Provence as a dependency of the Neapolitan crown.
The dating window 1349–1362 brackets the worst years of the Black Death's recurrence in southern France, when mint activity across Provence was severely disrupted by population collapse and trade contraction.
