Besançon occupied a peculiar constitutional position — nominally a free imperial city within the Holy Roman Empire, yet geographically embedded in the Franche-Comté, a territory increasingly under Habsburg pressure. The city's mint continued striking coins in the name of Charles V decades after his 1558 abdication and death, a deliberate legal fiction known as immobilization, designed to preserve the city's autonomous minting rights against encroachment from Philip II's administration.
By 1578–1579, this monetary conservatism had become almost anachronistic. Charles had been dead twenty years.
