Struck under the authority of the tresviri monetales — the three mint magistrates whose abbreviated titles appear on the coinage — this quadrans belongs to a series issued during Augustus's reorganization of the Roman bronze coinage, a process that formalized senatorial oversight of the aes denominations through the S C formula. Sisenna and Apronius served as the responsible magistrates for this particular emission, their names preserved here in the only medium that guaranteed any permanence.
The quadrans was Rome's smallest bronze denomination, and issues of this period circulated heavily in urban and commercial contexts before largely disappearing from production under later emperors.
