正面描述 Central field features a modius (grain measure) depicted in profile, rendered in low relief characteristic of early Claudian bronze coinage. The circular Latin legend TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG runs around the periphery, identifying the emperor Claudius by his full imperial titulature. The design is entirely epigraphic and symbolic, with no imperial portrait, a deliberate choice consistent with the modest character of the quadrans denomination. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, typical of hammered bronze production at the Rome Mint during the reign of Claudius.

附加信息

Struck under Claudius in the first year of his reign, this quadrans belongs to a series issued through 54 AD that revived a denomination largely dormant since Augustus. Claudius used the small bronze coinage in part to supply Rome's taverns and street markets, where larger denominations were impractical. The RC and PNR abbreviations found on this type — standing for the mint officials responsible — are among the few instances of named accountability on Roman imperial bronze at this fraction.
