The modius, symbolic of imperial generosity and the grain supply, is presented frontally and occupies the center of the flan. A Latin legend encircles the design along the periphery, partially visible on this heavily worn specimen. The hammered flan displays the characteristic irregular edge typical of early Imperial bronze coinage. |

Claudius issued a series of anonymous quadrantes — bearing no imperial portrait or name — early in his reign, a deliberate archaism harking back to Republican-era small bronze coinage. The PON M TR P IMP COS II dating places this piece firmly in 42 AD, the year of the Camillus conspiracy, when a group of Dalmatian governors attempted to depose him. Whether the conservative, self-effacing character of these coins reflects genuine ideological posturing or simply administrative continuity from Caligula's mint practice remains debated.
