Obverse description A carpenter's hammer depicted in the center of the field, shown upright with the head at top, serving as the principal type. The Latin legend COND MALL is distributed around the hammer in the field, reading partially to the left and partially to the right of the central device. The design alludes to the founding of the colony, with the hammer referencing construction and the establishment of Carthago Nova. The flan is irregular and slightly rough, consistent with provincial hammered bronze coinage of the Augustan period.
