Quadrans - Augustus

Leptis Magna operated with considerable civic autonomy under Augustus, retaining the right to strike its own bronze coinage — a privilege not uniformly extended across North African municipalities. This small bronze belongs to that local series, issued under Roman suzerainty but reflecting the city's Punic administrative traditions, which persisted well into the imperial period. Leptis would not achieve full Roman colonial status until Trajan's reign.
