Obulco — modern Porcuna, in the upper Guadalquivir valley — was one of the few Iberian mints to produce a fractional bronze series with any regularity, a fact that points to genuine commercial activity rather than purely civic or military issue. The Turdetani maintained enough trade density in this corridor, linking the mineral-rich hinterland to coastal markets, to justify small-denomination coinage in sustained quantity.
The mint is also unusual for its bilingual inscriptions, rendering the city name in both Iberian script and Latin — an early accommodation to Roman administrative presence that was uncommon this far inland before the mid-second century.
