| Reverse description | Central field bearing a four-line Kufic Arabic inscription arranged concentrically within the flan, reading 'Amir al-Muslimin / wa-Nasir al-Din / Yusuf ibn Tashfin', attributing the title and name of the Almoravid ruler Yusuf ibn Tashfin without the additional title of the reigning emir Ali. The bold, angular Kufic lettering is deeply struck in high relief, filling the available field. The absence of a mint name and the omission of Ali b. Yusuf's own name on this type is characteristic of the 'without title' classification. The irregular flan and slightly off-center strike are consistent with hammered production of the period. |
