The lettering, consistent with Golden Horde epigraphy of the mid-14th century, identifies the issuing amir and the mint of Mokhshi (Narovchat), an important administrative and commercial center of the Golden Horde located in the present-day Penza Region of Russia. The script is rendered in a cursive hand typical of provincial copper issues, with modest calligraphic execution and visible surface corrosion obscuring portions of the legend. |
