The year 1363 fell during one of the most turbulent stretches of Golden Horde history — the period known to Russian chronicles as the "Great Troubles," a two-decade succession crisis during which the khanate cycled through more than twenty claimants. Abdallah Khan was a puppet figure installed and controlled by the powerful emir Mamai, who never held the throne himself but effectively directed western Horde policy through a series of nominal rulers. Coins struck in Abdallah's name from provincial mints like Azaq represent administrative insistence on fiscal continuity even as political authority fragmented almost beyond recognition.
