Pugesa Armengol X, Cubells

Armengol X was the last Count of Urgell of the original Urgell line, and his coinage reflects the political precariousness of a county increasingly subordinate to the Crown of Aragon. He died in 1314 without legitimate male heirs, triggering a succession dispute that would eventually extinguish the county's independence entirely by the mid-fifteenth century. Cubells, the issuing mint, was a fortified town in the southern reaches of the county — its selection likely tied to Armengol's territorial priorities in the contested lowland frontier zones.

The Cru#1401 classification places this among the more elusive Urgell minor issues; surviving examples in any condition are infrequently encountered at auction.
