| Reverse description | A large Greek cross dominates the central field, serving as the primary design element commemorating the centenary of nursing in South Africa. Superimposed at the centre of the cross is a nursing lamp (an oil lamp of the Aladdin style), a traditional symbol of the nursing profession associated with Florence Nightingale. The upper arm of the cross bears the founding date '1891' and the lower arm the commemorative date '1991'. A bilingual arc legend surrounds the upper portion of the design, reading 'VERPLEGING' on the left and 'PROTEA NURSING' on the right.
