Reverse description A large Greek cross dominates the central field, serving as the primary design element commemorating the centenary of nursing in South Africa. Superimposed at the centre of the cross is a nursing lamp (an oil lamp of the Aladdin style), a traditional symbol of the nursing profession associated with Florence Nightingale. The upper arm of the cross bears the founding date '1891' and the lower arm the commemorative date '1991'. A bilingual arc legend surrounds the upper portion of the design, reading 'VERPLEGING' on the left and 'PROTEA NURSING' on the right. The lower exergue carries the denomination and metal specification '1/10 OZ FYNGOUD FINE GOLD'.
