Additional information

Raymond III ruled Tripoli through one of the most militarily precarious stretches of the crusader states, culminating in the catastrophic defeat at Hattin in 1187 — a battle he survived but which effectively ended the County's independence. These small bronze issues circulated in a port economy heavily dependent on Italian merchant communities, and Tripolitanian coinage of this period shows clear influence from Byzantine and local Syrian monetary traditions absorbed through decades of contact rather than conquest.
