Henry of Champagne never actually took the title of king — he ruled Jerusalem as "Lord of the Kingdom" following his marriage to Queen Isabella I in 1192, a careful legal fiction maintained because he had not been crowned. His coinage nonetheless functioned as royal issue in every practical sense, circulating through the Crusader ports of Acre and Tyre during a period when the kingdom had been reduced to a coastal strip following Saladin's conquests. Henry died in 1197 when he fell from a window in Acre, likely through a faulty balustrade, ending a reign of just five years.
