The Lingones occupied the upper Marne and Saône valleys in what is now Burgundy and Champagne, and their potin coinage was cast rather than struck — a distinction that separates Gaulish potin issues from the hammered traditions borrowed from Greek and Roman practice. Cast coins were produced in clay or stone molds arranged in strips, leaving characteristic sprue marks where individual flans broke free.
