Potin with diabolic head Class I

The Turoni occupied the territory around the Liger (Loire) valley, centered on what is now Tours. Their potin coinage — cast rather than struck, distinguishing it immediately from the struck silver and gold issues of neighboring Armorican and Belgic groups — circulated during a period of intensifying Roman pressure that culminated in Caesar's Gallic campaigns of the 50s BC. Many Turonean potin pieces entered the archaeological record as site finds from oppida contexts rather than formal hoards, suggesting everyday transactional use rather than storage or ritual deposit.
