| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the crowned royal arms of Portugal — the escutcheon displaying the quinas (five blue shields charged with bezants) and the bordure of castles — set within a beaded inner circle. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of fleurs-de-lis and orbs. Two small pellets or annulets flank the shield in the field, serving as the mintmark 'o-o' identifying the Lisbon mint under João III's first type. The surrounding legend, separated from the inner device by a plain border, reads the king's full royal titulature in abbreviated Latin, running clockwise. |
