| Beschrijving voorzijde | The royal arms of Portugal, comprising the traditional escutcheon with five quinas arranged in cross formation and a bordure of castles, surmounted by a royal crown at the top of the shield, occupies the central field. The mint marks L and R flank the crowned shield on either side, with varieties distinguished by the number of pellets above the letters: three pellets over both L and R (Gomes J3 192) or one pellet over both L and R (Gomes J3 193). A circular beaded inner border encloses the central device, with the Latin royal titulary legend disposed around the periphery. The overall design is characteristic of the robust, high-relief hammered style of Manueline and early Joanine Portuguese gold coinage. |
