The portugał — a denomination borrowed from the Portuguese gold coin of the same name — was never intended for circulation. These heavy gold multiples functioned as presentation pieces, distributed by Sigismund III Vasa as diplomatic gifts and rewards to magnates whose loyalty he was perpetually, and not always successfully, cultivating. The Vilnius mint struck them in very limited numbers; surviving examples are rare enough that individual pieces appear at major auction houses with decades between appearances.
Sigismund's hold on the Polish-Lithuanian throne was contested almost from the start, complicated further by his parallel claim to the Swedish crown, which he lost definitively at Stångebro in 1598.
