The polupoltinnik — literally a "half-half-ruble" — was among the fractional silver denominations rationalized under Catherine II's monetary reforms of the early 1760s, which sought to standardize a coinage system still riddled with inconsistencies inherited from Peter I and his immediate successors. Production ran only three years before the denomination was quietly abandoned, a short window that kept total mintages low across all issuing facilities.
The Moscow Mint handled the bulk of this issue, with St. Petersburg contributing comparatively modest output in select years.
