Elbing had been under Swedish occupation since 1655, seized early in the catastrophic conflict the Poles call the Potop — the Deluge — when Charles X Gustav swept through the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with stunning speed. The city's mint, one of the few operating under Swedish authority in occupied Polish territory, struck these półtorak pieces as part of Sweden's broader effort to sustain a functioning monetary supply in the region during active campaigning.
Kopicki distinguishes two varieties across these two years, catalogued separately as 9657 and 9658.
