The poltina — half a ruble — was reintroduced as a proper struck coin under Alexander I's monetary reforms of 1810, pushed through by Finance Minister Mikhail Speransky as part of a broader effort to stabilize Russian currency after decades of inflationary assignat paper money had eroded public confidence in the monetary system. The reform established new weight and fineness standards that this type was the first generation to follow.
Production ran continuously through the transition of reigns following Alexander's death at Taganrog in November 1825, with Nikolai I's accession issues struck amid the chaos of the Decembrist uprising weeks later.
