Additional information

The countermark on this półtalar reflects a recurring administrative headache of the Jagiellonian monetary system: coins struck at Wilno frequently re-entered the mint for validation or revaluation as Polish-Lithuanian monetary union demands shifted weight and fineness standards through the 1560s. Sigismund II Augustus spent much of his reign attempting to harmonize coinage across the sprawling Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before its formal 1569 union — a project complicated by the Wilno mint's semi-independent operation under Lithuanian jurisdiction.

The three Kop references suggest at least three distinct countermark varieties are attributed to this type, a detail worth verifying against the specific punch present on this example.
