Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki was elected king in 1669 largely because the Polish nobility feared a stronger candidate — a deliberate choice for weakness that defined his entire reign. He ruled without meaningful political authority, caught between the Habsburgs and French factions that had opposed his election, and died in 1673 just as the Ottoman war he had mismanaged reached its most critical phase. Elbląg, operating under complex Polish-Prussian jurisdictional arrangements at the time, produced coinage for the Crown throughout his short reign.

The półtalar denomination from this mint in this period is notably scarce; Voss records only a handful of die combinations across 248–249.
