Stefan Batory's relationship with Gdańsk was openly hostile. The city had backed the Habsburg claimant Maximilian II during the 1575–1576 succession dispute, and Batory spent the early years of his reign forcing Gdańsk into submission through military blockade and economic pressure. The 1577 siege ended in a negotiated settlement that nonetheless compelled the city to mint coinage acknowledging his kingship — these gold issues from 1579 are a direct product of that coerced loyalty.
Kop. 7427 is among the scarcer Gdańsk half-ducat types of the reign, with surviving examples frequently showing adjustment marks from the city's careful weight control practices.
