Obverse description Central field features the arms of Basel — a black crozier on a white shield — displayed within a pointed heraldic shield of Gothic form, surrounded by a beaded inner border. The circular legend in Gothic (uncial) lettering reads MONETA.NOVA.BASILENSIS, running clockwise around the periphery. The coin is pierced at the top, a common post-mint alteration. The overall style is consistent with early sixteenth-century Swiss municipal coinage, with bold, deeply struck lettering characteristic of the hammered technique.
