| Reverse description | Central device features the Cross of the Order of Christ, a plain cross potent outlined with a bold border and charged with four groups of five quinas (escutcheons bearing five bezants) arranged in the quadrants, forming the traditional Portuguese royal arms in cross form. The circular legend IN.HOC.SIGNO.VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer) runs around the periphery, interspersed with star stops, with the date 1778 appearing at the top between two stars. The design is bold and heraldic, consistent with Portuguese gold coinage of the late 18th century. |
