Obverse description Central field displays the royal legend MARIA.I ET.P.III in two lines within an open wreath of laurel branches, tied at the base with a small floral ornament. The denomination numeral 400 appears at the bottom of the field, below the wreath junction. Surmounting the legend is a Portuguese royal crown rendered in high relief, occupying the upper portion of the coin. The design is typographic in character, with no portrait effigy, relying entirely on inscribed text and heraldic ornament to denote the co-regency of Maria I and Pedro III.
