Obverse description Large Gothic letter S occupying the central field, surmounted by a papal tiara and keys. The date appears in the lower portion of the field. A circular Latin legend runs around the periphery, interrupted by crowns and decorative stops. The overall style is characteristic of late 16th-century hammered papal coinage, with the bold initial serving as the principal device in reference to Pope Sixtus V.

Reverse description A cross fleurdelisée occupies the central field, its four arms terminating in fleurs-de-lis. The circular Latin legend naming Charles of Bourbon as cardinal legate of Avignon runs around the periphery, separated by decorative stops. The design is executed in the hammered style typical of Comtat Venaissin ecclesiastical coinage of the late 16th century.
