| Obverse description | Large Gothic letter S occupying the central field, surmounted by a papal tiara and keys. The date appears in the lower portion of the field. A circular Latin legend runs around the periphery, interrupted by crowns and decorative stops. The overall style is characteristic of late 16th-century hammered papal coinage, with the bold initial serving as the principal device in reference to Pope Sixtus V. |
