The letter K serves as an abbreviation for Carolus (Charles), referring to Carlo Malatesta, co-ruler and senior lord of the Malatesta dynasty. The surrounding legend in uncial Latin abbreviates the titles and name of Charles Malatesta. The die work is typical of the rough, hand-hammered piccoli coinage of the Marche region in the early fifteenth century. |

Pandolfo, Galeazzo, and Charles Malatesta ruled Pesaro jointly during one of the more turbulent stretches of Romagnol politics, their authority constantly shadowed by papal pressure and Visconti entanglements. The CNI XIII reference remaining open — dash rather than number — reflects how poorly documented this issue remains in the major census literature, with surviving specimens rarely surfacing outside Italian regional collections.
