Reverse description Saint George on horseback, depicted in full armour in a vigorous equestrian composition, charging to the right with lance levelled, slaying a dragon beneath the horse's hooves. The horse is rearing dramatically, and the dragon — rendered with reptilian detail — writhes on the ground beneath, pierced by the saint's lance. In the lower exergue, below an ornamental line, appear two small heraldic shields. The encircling Latin legend S GEORGIVS FERRARIAE PROTECTOR runs along the toothed or rope-pattern border, identifying Saint George as protector of Ferrara.
