Central rosette or wheel motif with multiple radiating petals occupying the field, surrounded by four stylized foliate or leonine forms arranged symmetrically at the cardinal points. A small schematic facing head or mask appears at the top of the design, rendered in the crude but expressive Romanesque style typical of 12th-century Austrian bracteate-influenced pfennigs. The overall composition is densely decorated with interlocking organic forms, leaving little open field. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-hammered medieval coinage of this period. |
Werinto-Dietrich died before this coin was struck — the posthumous attribution reflects the County of Formbach's political need to maintain continuity of comital authority during a period when the dynasty was already in terminal decline. Formbach itself was absorbed by the Bavarian Wittelsbach sphere within a generation, making coinage from this window exceptionally sparse in the documentary record.
