The Laufenburg branch of the Habsburgs split from the main line following the partition of family territories in the mid-thirteenth century, holding their seat at Laufenburg on the Rhine until the line died out in 1408. These small bracteate-style pfennigs were struck for local exchange in the upper Rhine region at a moment when the Habsburgs were ascending rapidly — Rudolf I was elected King of Germany in 1273 — yet the Laufenburg counts remained a minor collateral branch, minting on a correspondingly modest scale.
