Friesach, in the Salzburg archdiocese's southern territories, became the dominant minting center for the eastern Alpine region in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries — so influential that "Friesacher Pfennig" became a trade currency standard used in contracts as far as Hungary and the Adriatic coast. The particular attribution of this piece to Carinthian ducal authority remains contested; multiple lords held minting rights in and around Friesach simultaneously, and the CNA classification reflects that ambiguity rather than resolving it.
Thin, broad fabric typical of the type makes these coins structurally fragile in circulation, which accounts for the high proportion of bent or creased survivors.
