Friesach, in what is now southern Austria, was one of the most important minting centers in the German-speaking lands during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries — its silver pfennigs circulated so widely across Central Europe and the Balkans that "Friesacher" became a generic term for quality coinage in regional commerce. The town sat on the Archbishop of Salzburg's territory, but the Dukes of Carinthia maintained competing minting rights there, producing issues that are notoriously difficult to attribute with precision. CNA Cj64 falls into that contested zone.
