Friesach, in what is now the Austrian state of Carinthia, was one of the most productive minting centers in the German-speaking world during the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The so-called Friesacher Pfennig circulated far beyond its region of origin — documented in hoards from Hungary, Bohemia, and the Balkans — because it maintained a reliable silver standard at a time when coinage across Central Europe was being systematically debased. Multiple lords held minting rights at Friesach simultaneously, including the Archbishop of Salzburg, making precise attribution of individual dies a persistent problem that the CNA classification reflects honestly.
