Friesach pfennigs were among the most influential coinages in medieval Central Europe, circulating so widely across the eastern Alpine region that "Friesacher" became a generic term for small silver coinage in 13th and 14th century documents from Slovenia to Hungary. By the time this piece was struck, the original Friesach mint had long ceded dominance to imitators — Carinthian dukes, Styrian lords, and ecclesiastical authorities all struck variants, making precise attribution genuinely difficult without die study. The CNA Cu44 classification reflects that uncertainty honestly.
