Ulrich III ruled Carinthia during a period of acute dynastic instability — the Interregnum of the Holy Roman Empire (1254–1273) left German territories effectively without imperial oversight, and local lords across the Alpine duchies exploited the vacuum to assert minting rights with unusual independence. Ulrich himself died in 1269 without a male heir, triggering a succession crisis that ultimately delivered Carinthia into Habsburgian hands within a generation.
The CNA Ch30 classification places this firmly within the thin, broad bracteate-influenced pfennig tradition of the mid-thirteenth century eastern Alpine mints.
