Ulrich III ruled Carinthia during a period of acute Babenberg succession crisis — the dynasty had died out in 1246, leaving Austria and Styria contested between Bohemia, Hungary, and various Habsburg claimants. Carinthia itself passed through several hands before Ulrich consolidated control, and his coinage reflects that instability: the Windischgrätz pfennigs are bracteate-style issues of notably thin fabric, struck to a regional weight standard that diverged from contemporary Styrian and Austrian norms.
